Making a new bumper

Post by pertneer » Tue May 19, 2009 9:54 am

I am finally getting around to getting my new bumper for my Jeep fabricated. I will be posting pictures of the build on this one as I get it under way. The steel should be in today or tomorrow. I will try to get pictures of the machine work that I am doing on it too, If I remember to take the camera to work. lol

To start with after I machined the stock to length I bored the hole for the pivot point to be welded into. In this first picture you can see when I was machining the slots for the the d-ring mount to go through the bumper.

As a result of a miscalculation when I drew it up over two years ago, I had to make a minor modification to the bumper because the dimension I measured was from outside to outside and I drew it up to centerline. So the slots were way off (rookie). So I made some decrative covers to weld over the offending extra hole.

I then had been thinking of getting some bumper stickers made with the site address for this site and did not have the extra cash, so I decided to do one better. I set the bumper back into the CNC mill and engraved the address into the bumper itself. I think it turned out pretty good, but the wife thinks I am a little nuts.

Here are some other shots of the bumper and the tire carrier that I made in another post on this site.
They consist of the hinge, the bumper with tire carrier, and the place where the lock will be located as soon as it gets delivered.

I still need to sandblast it, get rid of any splatter, and generally debug any sharp edges, before it goes to be powder coated, then I am going to paint the letter the same color as my Jeep.

Got it back from being powder coated. It is all masked off to paint the letters, so I will get the pictures when it is done.

WOW That turned out really nice!
Does it rattle? I have seen many different types and most of them have a rattle while driving.
